HYLOZOISM IN ART AND TECHNOLOGY”

Hylozoism is a philosophy, a system that views all matter as alive. As objects are being created, used and destructed, the totality of creation form the “network of meaning” of living existences.
In the “network of meaning”, artificial intelligence and robots created by technology and industries are all living existences in this world. When technology continues to advance and becomes our second skin, it becomes a “neo-nature” that is inseparable from us. In such case, how can we re-establish the relationship between man, survival and nature?
In this seminar moderated by Joel Kwong (curator at Microwave International New Media Arts Festival), local video art pioneer Ellen Pau will be joined by Keith Lam, curator of the exhibition Sensory Transcode and media artist using technology as creative medium. Together they will share about their work and their views on the integration of art and technology, as well as discuss the subject of neo-nature.

- Participants may be captured in photos or video-recordings during the programme. All photos and videos will be used for promotion purpose only.
- For participants’ safety, if any emergency situations happen during the programme (e.g. adverse weathers, accidents or disturbances), the programme may be suspended or cancelled immediately depending on the actual conditions. If there is any emergencies or if you feel unwell, please seek assistance from our on-site staff immediately.

- If the programme is cancelled due to inclement weather conditions, no substitute time slots will be provided.
SPEAKERS
ELLEN PAU
Ellen Pau (b. 1961, Hong Kong) aims to raise our awareness of our physical presence and inspire contemplation of what it means to be, to exist, here and now, and beyond that, the space each of us occupies. Pau became one of the earliest pioneering video artists in Hong Kong. Beyond artistic creation, she has also been a leader in the promotion, curation, and education of art and culture in Hong Kong, through the founding of several important initiatives, including the city’s oldest video artist collective and archive for media art, Videotage (1986). Pau also founded Microwave International New Media Arts Festival in 1996. Her works have been exhibited locally and worldwide in film festivals and art exhibitions. In 2001, Recycling Cinema, one of her most significant video installations, was presented at the Hong Kong Pavilion in the 49th Venice Biennale.
KEITH LAM
Media artist, co-founder and artistic director of art and technology studio Dimension Plus, founder of composite space openground.
Keith Lam’s works have won awards at various international art festivals including the world-leading new media arts award Prix Ars Electronica, and Japan Media Arts Festival, among others. His works have also been shown in museums and art festivals around the world, such as the National Art Center, Tokyo, OK Center for Contemporary Art in Austria, New Technological Art Award Biennial in Belgium, Hong Kong Museum of Art.
Also committed to new media art and design education, Lam teaches and consults at various universities & institutions in Hong Kong with the aim of promoting digital fabrication in art.
MODERATOR
JOEL KWONG
Joel Kwong, an international media art curator, writer, producer and educator based in Hong Kong. She is currently the Programme Director for Microwave International New Media Arts Festival and the founder of SIBYLS – a creative consultation & production agency. Projects she curated have been shown and toured in many different cities around the globe, and she has given talks and lectures in different festivals and institutions.
